A GEOINT Educator

In 2018, Dr. Carolynne Hultquist was one of the many GEOINT students to receive a USGIF scholarship. Hultquist attended the University of North Carolina at Charlotte from 2010 to 2014 where she received a Bachelor of Science in Geography and a Bachelor of Arts in International Studies. Later, she attended Pennsylvania State University (PSU) where she received a Master of Science in Geography. She remained at PSU and became a doctoral student studying geography and social data analytics, when she was awarded the scholarship.

At PSU she specialized in fusing sources of geographic information to better understand complex environments. Hultquist has conducted research in energy, complexity theory, machine learning, and the use of geospatial technologies during hazards. The focus of her research at PSU was the use of computational methods for spatiotemporal analysis and modeling the effects of natural disasters on humans. And in 2019, she received her Ph.D.

After receiving her Ph.D., Hultquist decided to remain in the academic GEOINT community. She accepted a position as a postdoctoral research scientist at the Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN) at Columbia University. Hultquist decided to remain in academia not just because the idea of performing in-depth research intrigued her, but because she would be able to teach and influence a new generation of GEOINT professionals.

“I see myself in a role where I can teach hundreds of people [GEOINT skills]. There are many different avenues you can take to help advance the field and I see academia as one of them,” said Hultquist.

This year’s EdGEOcation Giving Fund at USGIF will directly support the 2021 USGIF Scholarship Program.

Your donation will contribute to:

• Ten (10) $1,000 scholarships to high school students for a total of $10,000;
• Twenty (20) $3,000 scholarships to undergraduate and graduate, and doctoral students for a total of $60,000.

To further the advancement of the geospatial tradecraft, USGIF is dedicated to assisting promising students studying GEOINT, geospatial sciences and related fields. The annual USGIF Scholarship Program recognizes the achievements of graduating high school seniors, undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students. USGIF has awarded $1.4 million in scholarships since launching the program in 2004.
