Boundless Deploys GeoSHAPE to Louisiana DHH

Boundless announced it is helping the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals (DHH) initiative discover cost-effective strategies to collect early information on facilities and citizens in high-risk areas in the event of an evacuation. With support from Boundless, DHH is deploying a system designed for humanitarian assistance known as Geospatial capabilities for Security, Humanitarian Assistance, Partner Engagement (GeoSHAPE). GeoSHAPE is an open-source project designed to enable collaboration on geospatial information. In this case, federal and Louisiana state authorities are able to collaborate and overlay storm and flood data with facility map information. 

Spatial Networks App to Help tenBoma Initiative

The International Fund for Animal Welfare and the Kenya Wildlife Service will use Spatial Networks’ Fulcrum app to power its tenBoma initiative, reports Creative Loafing Tampa. The technology would allow rangers to share evidence of poaching with wildlife authorities to help track poachers before they commit their next crime. Fulcrum users can share spreadsheets, photos, and videos from different devices and the app can quickly convert paper documents into electronic records. The tenBoma initiative is a collaborative effort aiming to protect Kenya’s elephants from poachers through identifying and dismantling poaching chains.

Harris Recognized for Mentor-Protégé Program

Harris Corporation and its protégé Spatial Data Integrations were awarded the Nunn-Perry Award by the Department of Defense (DoD). The award honors successful business mentor-protégé teams excelling in technical assistance, return on investments, and protégé development. The Harris-Spatial Data Integrations mentor-protégé agreement was awarded under a geospatial content management contract with the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA).

Envitia Achieves Cyber Essentials Scheme Certification

Envitia was awarded a Certificate of Assurance for compliance with the information security requirements for the Cyber Essentials Scheme via the IASME Consortium. Cyber Essentials was developed by the United Kingdom government and industry as a way to help organizations implement basic levels of protection against common cyber attacks.

Penn State Offers Remote Sensing Certificate

Pennsylvania State University is now offering an online graduate certificate program in remote sensing and earth observation. The program is 12 credits and offered by the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences through the Penn State World Campus. In this program, students will learn how to understand and analyze remote sensing imagery and terrain data. 

Google & University of Maryland Create Tracking System for Illegal Logging

As a way to help combat illegal logging and deforestation, scientists at the University of Maryland and Google have launched Global Land Analysis and Discovery (Glad) alerts. According to a Guardian article, the alert system uses an algorithm to analyze weekly updates of satellite images and send automatic notifications about new logging activity. As of now, Glad data is available for Peru, the Republic of Congo, and Indonesia, with plans to expand the system beyond these three countries.

LTG Michael T. Flynn, former director of the Defense Intelligence Agency, joined the Advisory Board of Brainwave Science.

Alphabet Chairman and Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt was appointed by Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter to head a new Defense Innovation Advisory Board, reports CNN. The board will help the Pentagon keep up with the latest Silicon Valley ideas and apply them at the Department of Defense.

Engility’s Board of Directors named Lynn Dugle CEO. Dugle brings more than 30 years of experience in defense, intelligence, and telecommunications. Additionally, John Hynes, Engility’s executive vice president and COO was named president and COO. Previously, Hynes was CEO of TASC.

HERE appointed Edzard Overbeek CEO to lead the company as a newly independent entity. Overbeek was most recently the strategic advisor at Cisco.
