NGA & NRO Establish Joint Activity to Explore Commercial GEOINT

The National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) and the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) have created a joint activity to help both agencies identify and access emerging commercial geospatial intelligence tools. According to NGA, the Commercial GEOINT Activity is scheduled to begin operations by Sept. 30 and will work to develop strategies to integrate platforms that NGA and NRO can use. The new group will conduct assessments, recommend investment decisions and engage user communities as well as advise NRO and NGA on joint acquisition activities for vendors that can provide data collection and analytic platforms.

NGA Invites Industry to Participate in New eNGAge Program

NGA is promoting its new expertise-exchange program with industry, which it hopes will bring new ideas and energy into the agency, according to C4ISRNet. Under the program, NGA will send representatives to work in industry for six-month to one-year periods, while industry and academic partners are invited to send their experts to NGA for up to five years. The program is intended to benefit both NGA and its traditional and nontraditional partners. Learn more about eNGAge and how it works here.

DigitalGlobe to Provide Satellite Imagery to Uber

DigitalGlobe announced it would provide high-resolution commercial imagery to Uber. The multi-year, global partnership will help improve the Uber experience for both riders and drivers around the globe and help improve the identification of pick-up and drop-off locations, according to the DigitalGlobe blog. Highly detailed imagery will become increasingly important for Uber as it seeks to replace its human drivers with a fleet of self-driving vehicles, according to The Atlantic.

NASA & USAID Award Tetra Tech Geospatial Technology Contract

NASA and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) awarded Tetra Tech a $13-million contract to promote the use of geospatial technology to help strengthen the West African region’s resilience to climate change through the Global SERVIR program.

SERVIR is a joint NASA-USAID initiative to partner with leading organizations in developing countries to harness Earth observation satellite data and geospatial technologies to manage climate risks and land use. SERVIR West Africa is being implemented through the Agrometeorology, Hydrology, and Meteorology Regional Center (AGRHYMET), a specialized institution of the Permanent Inter-State Committee for Drought Control in the Sahel. Under the SERVIR West Africa contract, Tetra Tech will build the capacity of AGRHYMET and its consortium members to use satellite imagery to help West African countries reduce the negative impacts of climate change, ensure sustainable land use management, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
