Planet Labs Rebrands to Planet

Planet Labs is shortening its name to Planet. According to the company’s press release, the new name comes with a new, more comprehensive identity. In the past few years, Planet has built nearly 200 satellites, an automated data pipeline, and an online platform, allowing people around the world access to its satellite imagery. Planet said in the course of the next year, people will see some exciting releases from the company. Additionally, Planet is adding Carl Bass to its board of directors, reports a Bloomberg article. Bass is CEO of Autodesk Inc.

DigitalGlobe and exactEarth Team to Combat Illegal Fishing

DigitalGlobe and exactEarth announced a strategic alliance to offer joint services to the commercial fishing industry to aid in the combating of illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing. The alliance will combine exactEarth’s advanced maritime automatic identification system with DigitalGlobe’s high-resolution satellite imagery. The solution will leverage both organizations’ big data and predictive analytics capabilities to help governments address IUU fishing.

Hexagon Recognizes Airbus

Airbus Defence and Space was selected as a 2016 honoree in the Hexagon Sharpening Smart Change Recognition Program during Hexagon’s international conference HXGN Live, reports GISUser. The program recognizes Hexagon customers and partners for innovative applications of Hexagon technology to make significant contributions to their business. Hexagon applauded how Airbus leveraged Hexagon’s Smart M.Apps to allow users and developers to easily access imagery from Airbus’ Pleiades and SPOT satellites.

DigitalGlobe Wins DIA Analytics Contract

DigitalGlobe has won a $55 million direct contract with the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) to deliver advanced analytic services. The contract was awarded to DigitalGlobe’s GeoEye Analytics Inc. This contract will provide ongoing mission support to the DIA with innovative all-source analytic solutions. Work is expected to be completed by 2021.

OGSystems Debuts Immersive Engineering Practice

OGSystems recently debuted its immersive engineering practice with a mind mapping data collection exercise focused on the future state of GEOINT at USGIF’s GEOINT 2016 Symposium. According to OGSystems’ press release, immersive engineering is a problem-to-solutions approach integrating commercial best-practice techniques and expertise of lean startup, visioneering, scaled agile framework enterprise, and human-centered design. The OGSystems visioneering team conducted a discovery activity that engaged GEOINT 2016 attendees and captured their perspective on the future state of GEOINT. OGSystems illustrated that data in a mind map and visual rendering, and the findings from the activity will be used as part of an internal research and development project.
