NGA Assists in Response to West Virginia Flooding

The National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) is providing geospatial expertise and damage assessments to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to assist in response to recent flooding in West Virginia. According to NGA’s press release, the agency is providing first responders with geospatial data, identifying flood plains in 10 populated areas, and supplied FEMA with indications of 570 damaged structures, eight impassable roads, and two damaged bridges.

Engility Awarded Army Intelligence Contract

Engility was awarded a $24 million contract to provide engineering support to the U.S. Army’s Tactical Exploitation of National Capabilities (TENCAP) program. TENCAP provides Army commanders with actionable intelligence gathered from around the world.

BAE Awarded Navy Airborne Reconnaissance Contract

BAE Systems secured a potential $12.5 million contract from the U.S. Navy to develop a soil-penetrating airborne reconnaissance prototype for threat assessment and neutralization, reports ExecutiveBiz. BAE Systems’ spectral solutions unit will design, build, and demonstrate an airborne technology intended to detect buried mines and improvised explosive devices from an altitude of up to 2,000 feet.

Harris Weather Data to Improve National Weather Service Accuracy

The National Weather Service will study localized weather data collected on Harris Corp.’s Helios digital platform. According to a Harris press release, the Helios platform pulls data from a nationwide network of 30,000 integrated traffic cameras to detect changing road conditions. The National Weather Service will use Helios to complement and enhance its forecasts, enabling real-time updates to visibility, rain, and snow conditions as well as weather predictions.

exactEarth Launches M3MSat Constellation

exactEarth announced the launch of the M3MSat (Maritime Monitoring and Messaging Microsatellite) by the Canadian government. M3M contains a high-performance Automatic Identification System (AIS) satellite payload, and exactEarth has exclusive license with Canada to commercialize the AIS data produced from the satellite.

Google Earth Updates Imagery

Google recently updated its Google Earth imagery with newer images from NASA and the U.S. Geological Survey’s Landsat 8 satellite, reports TechCrunch. After mining nearly a petabyte of data, Google Earth striped artifacts, clouds, and other atmospheric effects resulting in more crisp, clear, and unobstructed views of Earth.

Tucker as chairman and Marie Daly Price, professor of geography and international affairs at George Washington University, as president. Tucker and Price follow in the footsteps of AGS Chair John Gould and President Jerome “Jerry” Dobson.
