NGA Provides Geospatial Support for Dorian Relief Effort
The National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) is providing geospatial support via a public website for areas affected by Hurricane Dorian. The request came from the State Department and the Department of Defense to aid in support of acute humanitarian response and recovery.
AllSource Analysis to Identify and Monitor North Korean Military Facilities
NGA awarded AllSource Analysis a $1.9 million, one-year contract to support the agency’s Anything-as-a-Service (XaaS) program. AllSource will provide a cost-effective and integrated approach to the development of military-related GEOINT datasets specifically for North Korea. This project allows NGA to leverage AllSource’s expertise in analyzing remote sensing imagery and other geospatial data to detect specific types of objects and report on changes in features and patterns. AllSource has partnered with Maxar Technologies for this project.
ICEYE SAR Satellites Added to Commercial Constellation
ICEYE’s two newest SAR satellites, launched in July 2019, have finalized their initial commissioning and are available for customer data orders. The company now provides standardized commercial imaging access to three of its SAR satellites in addition to providing custom data products and solutions. ICEYE is set to launch two more SAR satellites by the end of 2019.
Eight Small Businesses Join U.S. Air Force Space Accelerator
This fall, eight companies from around the country will convene in Colorado Springs, Colo., for the Catalyst Space Accelerator’s fourth cohort, centered on space-based ISR. The eight companies include: Capella Space, Chandah Space Technologies (CST), ExoTerra Imaging, HyperVerge Inc., Kleos, MemComputing, Rhea Space Activity (RSA), and Space-Eyes.
Spire Announces First Weather Product
Spire announced its new maritime weather product, Spire Forecast, which will offer new weather forecasts dedicated to the maritime industry. The product will feature atmospheric and oceanographic weather attributes including, among others, sea surface temperature, ocean currents, wave height, surface wind, and air temperature, all available globally.
General Dynamics Introduces New Unmanned Underwater Vehicle
General Dynamics Mission Systems unveiled a new unmanned underwater vehicle, the Bluefin-12, at the 2019 Defense and Security Equipment International (DSEI) conference. The Bluefin-12 builds upon the Bluefin autonomy and uses shared Bluefin Robotics’ core capabilities, increased mission modularity, and embedded intelligence to complete users’ long-endurance, high-consequence and changing missions.
OGC Invites Participants to Help Advance Vector Tiles Interoperability
After the success of phase one of the Vector Tiles Pilot, the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) invites developers to participate in phase 2 of the Vector Tiles Pilot. The Vector Tiles Pilot will help geospatial enterprises better support disaster response, humanitarian relief, and other scenarios in which network availability is limited to specific areas or time periods.

Former NGA Director Robert Cardillo joined the advisory board of Analytical Space. He is now the eighth member of the advisory board.
Dr. Rod Fontecilla was appointed chief innovation officer and chief data scientist at Dovel Technologies. Fontecilla, who was most recently SVP and CTO at Altamira Technologies, will direct strategic research and development efforts, advance initiatives to expand corporate technical competencies and capabilities, and foster the development of innovative solutions.
Retired Rear Admiral Brian LaRoche was appointed vice president and chief operating officer for Cubic Mission Solutions (CMS). In this role, he will oversee the daily operations of the CMS business to ensure effective performance.
Martin Van Ryswykis was named Planet’s new senior vice president of Product. In this role, he will be responsible for guiding product vision and strategies.
Chris Shank joined Maxar as vice president of National Security Space, effective Sept. 9. As part of the Global Field Operations team, Shank will manage sales, business development, account management, and service delivery across Maxar’s national security customer base.
NASA selected Clayton Turner as the next director of the agency’s Langley Research Center. Turner will assume the position Sept. 30, when current director David Bowles retires after 39 years with the agency.
