Lockheed Martin Partners with Be the Match to Expedite Transplant Deliveries During Pandemic

Lockheed Martin has partnered with Be the Match to enable patients to continue receiving life-saving transplants without interruption during the COVID-19 pandemic by ensuring the timely delivery of bone marrow and blood stem cells for transplants. Under the partnership, Lockheed Martin provides weekly air transport based on government medical need. The company will fly government medical teams to the most critical, high-priority locations around the country. Lockheed Martin will also transport materials to support bone marrow transport to help in the government’s COVID-19 response.

CACI Awarded $465M Task Order to Provide Expertise for U.S. Army C5ISR Missions

CACI has been awarded a five-year single-award task order, with a ceiling value of more than $465 million, by the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command’s (CCDC) Command, Control, Computers, Communications, Cyber, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (C5ISR) center to provide research and development on cryptographic modernization, information security, and tactical network protection. Under the task order, CACI will provide mission expertise to enhance cyber defense capabilities for C5ISR systems. CACI will also provide the Army with new software-defined capabilities across the service’s many modernization initiatives and research areas. CACI will also support urgent requirements for AFC’s cross-functional teams, provide techniques and technologies to reduce risks for Army networks, and move innovative technologies such as artificial intelligence from the laboratory to the field.

L3Harris Lays Foundation for First Space-Based Gravitational Wave Observatory

From an observatory in orbit around the sun, scientists can observe the birth of galaxies, supermassive blackholes colliding, and the formation and evolution of compact binaries in the Milky Way Galaxy. The level of complexity and precision required to detect these gravitational wave signals is what makes the European Space Agency’s (ESA) Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) initiative so ambitious. LISA is scheduled to launch in the 2030s and is comprised of a constellation of three spacecraft in the same orbit as the Earth around the sun but trailing the Earth by 20 degrees in orbital phase. It detects gravitational waves by measuring the displacements between pairs of satellites with laser beams sent through optical telescopes on each satellite. NASA is a major collaborator in the ESA-led mission and L3Harris was up for the exciting and complex challenge—design the Engineering Development Unit Telescope (EDUT) for LISA. L3Harris’ capacity to design and build the majority of the solution internally at the Rochester, New York, facility provides a high level of control. The ability to own the whole solution is a testament to the strength of L3Harris’ vertical integration capabilities. The company’s profound understanding of the challenge and realistic approach to solving it is what ultimately won the contract.

Amazon EKS Now Generally Available in AWS GovCloud Regions

Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (Amazon EKS) is now generally available in Amazon Web Services (AWS) GovCloud (US) Regions. Now government organizations and commercial organizations in government-regulated industries who adopt Kubernetes as their standard for orchestrating containers can use Amazon EKS to deploy a managed Kubernetes cluster on AWS. According to the 2019 Cloud Native Computing Foundation survey of their community, Amazon EKS is the leading method for deploying Kubernetes. Amazon EKS deeply integrates Kubernetes with AWS to enable customers to leverage a broad range of services already available in AWS GovCloud (US).

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Utilizes Planet Data to Monitor Endangered Species Populations

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) has selected and utilized Planet’s RapidEye data to assess and monitor endangered species populations. When Planet retired the RapidEye constellation earlier this year, a new data source was needed. Planet Federal solutions engineer, Bill Raymond, worked with the USACE to identify an alternative solution to meet their needs; PlanetScope. The transition to PlanetScope data increased the resolution of the imagery previously utilized for the basemaps and did so without the large price tag that can often accompany tasking satellites to collect higher resolution imagery. Planet’s agile operations allowed Raymond to support the custom technical integration, ensuring continuity of the mission.
