Satellite imagery made headlines this week for various reasons.
The Guardian published some beautiful and insightful satellite imagery in a post titled “Satellite eye on Earth: July 2016 – in pictures.” Among the many images are wildfires in Central Africa and Russia, vegetation and infrastructure on the U.S.-Mexico border, urban expansion in New Delhi, India, and more.
The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) reported recent satellite images reveal China has built aircraft hangars on islands in the South China Sea. According to Reuters, these images were released after an international court in The Hague ruled China’s maritime claims in the South China Sea illegal. Looking closely at the imagery, CSIS said many fighter jets are visible and the hangars are designed to withstand an air strike.
Gizmodo reports NASA released 1,000 high-resolution images this month taken by its Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO). MRO has been active since 2005 and in total has taken more than 44,000 images of the red planet. The images can be viewed at the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment’s website.
